Second Annual Fishing Derby
2002

What a tremendous success we had this year! Our second annual fishing derby was bigger and better than ever! Everyone had a great time. Denver West Trout Unlimited volunteers brought their chuckwagon and cooked the lunch we provided of hot dogs, chips, cookies, drinks and snacks! Donny Cox, a professional bass fisherman, brought his tournament boat for the kids to see. What a treat! Volunteers for Troll-In-Thunder and the Division of Wildlife set up fishing clinics and taught the kids the basics about fish and fishing. They learned things like fish identification and knot tying.

The kids were provided with fishing rods, reels and bait, which they could take home to use in the future. The kids also received goodies such as T-shirts, stuffed animals, notepads, and lures. The West Metro fire department station #10 came and helped some of the kids fish. We even had a volunteer paramedic present just in case we needed someone, which luckily we did not. 7 News showed up and awarded Kim Steuart with the 7 Everyday Hero Award! What a terrific day!
