Organization To Help Kids Fulfill Dreams

The first annual Joseph's Journey Fishing Clinic was held last spring in Lakewood to help fulfill the dreams of children who suffer from a terminal or life-threatening illness. Each family attending the clinic learned about angler ethics, fish anatomy, aquatic ecology, fish handling and casting techniques. The Angler Education program donated tackle and a free fishing pole for all of the kids who participated. Participants enjoyed a day of fishing, food and friendship and are already looking forward to next year's event scheduled in June 2002. Joseph's Journey is a non-profit organization dedicated to fulfilling the dreams of children under 21 years of age who suffer from a terminal or life-threatening illness.

The focus is in providing these children with wilderness experiences, specialized hunts or outdoor expeditions. Kim and Vickie Steuart started Joseph's Journey in the summer of 2000 after their son, Joseph, died of leukemia on January 5, 2000, at the age of 14, Joseph loved the outdoors and planned to pursue a career in natural resources. Joseph had been planning his "dream caribou hunt" with his father but his dreams were cut short. Joseph's family could not fulfill all of their son's dreams, but they have now dedicated their lives to helping other children fulfill their own "dream" journeys through the creation of Joseph's Journey.
